Fixed Up: BBC Dame Janet Smith Report / Sir Bill Cotton / Jimmy Savile

Armando Iannucci spills the beans

The BBC allowed all manner of creative swearing and graphic insults to air during The Thick Of It.

But there was just one line in all of the scripts that made executives so nervous they insisted it be censored, creator Armando Iannucci has revealed.

The excised line, spoken by Peter Capaldi’s fiercely foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker was: ‘That’s inevitable. It’s as inevitable as what they’ll find in Jimmy Savile’s basement after he’s dead.’

‘The BBC lawyers said you can’t say that,’ Iannucci told an audience in Melbourne

Although Savile died in 2011, between seres three and four, the extent of his sexual abuse of children only began to emerge in September the following year, a month before the final episode aired.

Jimmy Savile and the BBC: Dame Janet Smith report’s key sections

Dame Janet’s investigation into dozens of sexual assaults by Savile heard evidence from over 700 people.

They included two BBC managers who confronted Savile over claims he took teenagers home from Top of the Pops.

The BBC received a number of “wake-up calls” relating to allegations of sexual misconduct

The first wake-up call concerned the activities of Harry Goodwin, the programme’s stills photographer from 1964, who allegedly took pornographic photos of girls in his dressing room after the show

The second wake-up call was in 1971 when Vera McAlpine telephoned the BBC to complain that her daughter Claire, then 15, had been seduced by a celebrity after she had attended TOTP as a member of the audience

The BBC carried out an investigation, but it was not conducted in a satisfactory way. The celebrity denied the allegation, and his denial was accepted

During the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and possibly after that, young people attending TOTP were at risk of moral danger

BBC embroiled in further scandal as executive ‘filmed Dutch child abuse movies’

DETECTIVES are investigating claims that a retired BBC executive abused young boys at his home in Amsterdam.

Jan 26, 2014

He is said to have owned a three-storey property near the city centre in the Eighties. Boys from British care homes were allegedly ferried there to take part in sex films.

Police have been told that the BBC employee was involved in the abuse and played a key role in distributing the films.

The news comes as Dutch police prepare to re-open an investigation into child sex, which may be broadened to include British paedophiles operating in the Netherlands.

Although the Sunday Express knows both the identity of the alleged abuser and his former address in Amsterdam, we have decided not to print the details to avoid jeopardising any police investigation. Scotland Yard refused to comment but the BBC last night confirmed it had alerted the Met.

“The man apparently owned the building. He let the bottom flat to a known British paedophile, kept the middle residence for himself and used the attic for filming pornographic films involving both adults and children.

“He is said to have travelled back and forth between London and Amsterdam, playing a key role in the distribution of the videos throughout Britain and Europe.” Last week, Dutch prosecutors confirmed they are to investigate the Netherlands former justice ministry secretary-general Joris Demmink for allegedly raping two Turkish boys.

Demmink will be questioned over allegations that he raped the boys, aged between 12 and 15, while visiting Istanbul in the mid-Nineties. He denies the claims and says he was not in Turkey at that time.

In 1998, his name came up during a Dutch inquiry, called the Rolodex Affair, into an Amsterdam paedophile network. The probe was shut down shortly afterwards, prompting accusations of a cover-up.

A spokeswoman for the Office of Public Prosecutions in The Hague said the Demmink case might trigger a wider investigation into British paedophiles in Amsterdam. She said: “The investigation will initially focus solely on the allegations made by the two Turkish boys.

“Whether the investigation starts to look at other things at a later stage, we don’t know, it’s too early to say.”

However, sources revealed Dutch and British police met last summer on the Isle of Wight.

Ex-BBC Radio Norfolk DJ Souter jailed for 22 years (friend of Max Clifford)

Souter, who worked for BBC Radio Norfolk in the 1980s, was a Venture Scouts leader, a mentor to young people and had been allowed to adopt a child.

Ex-BBC Radio Norfolk DJ Souter jailed for 22 years

Former BBC Radio Norfolk presenter Michael Souter has been jailed for 22 years for historic sex attacks on boys.

The 60-year-old, who worked at the station in the 1980s, used his status to meet, groom and abuse young boys over a 20-year-period, Norwich Crown Court heard.

Judge Mark Lucraft told Souter, from Loddon, Norfolk, that he had used “pathetic attempts to blame the victims and others” during his trial earlier this month.

Souter also worked for Radio Clyde, and had used his local celebrity status to abuse his victims.

The jury also found him guilty of seven counts of making and possessing indecent images of under-18s.

After the six-week trial, detectives revealed they were investigating further allegations of abuse against the defendant.

The court had heard he was also been investigated in 1993 and 2002, but no charges were brought.

The defendant, who has two properties in Spain and one in Norfolk, was banned indefinitely from working with children.

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-24755052

His catalogue of abuse began in 1979 when he worked at BBC Radio Norfolk.

Originally from Scotland, Souter worked as a producer and presenter in both commercial and BBC radio since the mid-1970s. He had previously presented for Radio Clyde.

Since 1989 he has worked as a freelance broadcaster and had run a media relations consultancy.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Souter’s abuse escalated as he took up senior positions within the community, including as a Scout leader and social services youth mentor.

Two of the boys were ‘repeatedly abused’ over five years.

The broadcaster was first arrested by police in 1993 but, because of a lack of evidence against him, he continued abusing boys for another six years.

One victim said in a statement read to the court: ‘Souter’s insistence that he is innocent and that this is all lies and conspiracy has not allowed full release and closure.’

Former BBC executive Mark Deitch downloaded indecent images of children

Former BBC executive downloaded a haul of online porn – including 150 indecent images of children – so massive it crashed his work’s entire internet connection

  • Mark Deitch, 57, of Willden, Bedfordshire, worked for BBC for 12 years
  • He admitted downloading images but said they were part of wider haul
  • Says he was unaware of folder called ‘pizza’ with indecent child images

A former BBC executive has admitted downloading more than 150 indecent images of children in folders named ‘teens’ and ‘candids’ onto a hard drive.

Mark Deitch, 57, of Willden, Bedfordshire, would spend hours of time at work at a talent agency scouring anonymous online forum 4chan for things to download as he procrastinated – and it was enough to crash the internet connection.

He admitted downloading the child images but said they were part of a wider haul from 4chan, London’s Southwark Crown Court heard today.

The ‘prolific downloader’ claims to have been unaware of a folder named ‘pizza’ which contained only indecent images of children.

He was set to face trial but has now pleaded guilty to two charges of making indecent images of children. Deitch has been undergoing a Newton hearing with a judge to determine if he was aware of the indecent images and whether or not he had intentionally downloaded them.

At the time of the offences Deitch, who worked for the BBC for 12 years and was responsible for purchasing programmes on behalf of other broadcasters, was working for talent agency Benjamin Management. He used a work computer to download the images before transferring them to an external hard drive.

His computer only came under scrutiny after technicians tried to fix it. Prosecutor Adrian Fleming said the original computer had been wiped so that it could be used by someone else.

This meant investigators could only examine the hard drive and that certain factors – such as a browser search history – were unavailable. They did find a folder called ‘MDX’ which Deitch admitted he may have created because it was his initials and an ‘X’ which could stand for X-rated content.

Mr Fleming said: ‘Within that we [found] a number of sub files including one entitled “pizza”.

‘Technicians did not appear to have very much difficulty in finding that folder – when they went in they were simply trying to fix a problem.

‘This file “pizza”, in which approximately half of the images were found, was – in the Crown’s submission – a fairly obvious place within the MDX folder.’

The file contained 80 indecent images of children and no other content. These images were part of about 33,000 files stored on the external device, almost all of which are thought to be pornographic.

Mr Fleming noted that the ‘creation date’ on the files ranged for vast periods of 2013 and 2014 and suggested that this may mean that Deitch added files to the device on a number of occasions.

‘All the downloads of the files were from a computer called Mark PC,’ the prosecutor confirmed.

He went through folder names such as ‘candids’ and ‘teen’ as he explained how some images were in folders only containing unlawful images while other were mixed with legal, adult pornography.

In total six images of the most serious category were found on the device plus 43 of the second grouping and 115 of the third. There was also a video file that was in the third band of seriousness.

During an interview when presented with the file name ‘stills’ Deitch said that it ‘rings a bell a bit’, though this folder also contained hundreds of other legal images.

Deitch has admitted downloading, and therefore making, the images but has denied knowing that they were present in part of a bulk download.

Career: Deitch worked for the corporation (whose Broadcasting House in Central London is pictured) for 12 years and was responsible for purchasing programmes on behalf of other broadcasters

Deitch told the court that for him the downloading was not a thrill because of the pornography but that the process was what interested him.

He said: ‘I found that the searching soothes me – it is the downloading that interests me.’

The former BBC executive said that he would spend hours of time at work scouring 4chan for things to download as he procrastinated.

He admitted that he had stumbled across child pornography on the site ‘once or twice’ but claimed to have immediately alerted moderators.

‘Whilst I was at work I would go into 4chan and then there would be a post. – a new post would come up every couple of seconds, it could be anything.

‘It meant doing something other than the thing you are doing as a displacement exercise – it was distraction. I was not functioning with a full deck at that point to be honest.

‘More often than not I would unzip it to the PC and then copy it over in bulk in the evening.

‘It was a ridiculous amount – so much so in fact that I got an email from the building maintenance people saying “somebody in your office is really slowing down the building, will you stop it please”. It was enough to crash the internet connection.’

Deitch admitted he had a particular fondness for ‘amateur’ couples and ‘casting auditions’ when it came to looking for what he described as ‘legal porn’.

He maintained that he had not actively sought out indecent images of children but this his knowledge of the online forum should have alerted him that there could be a risk.

‘I suppose certainly looking back on it now there were people there who were into all sorts of weird stuff. It would not be beyond the realm of possibilities that something untoward would be placed there.’

(Pizzagate?)

He was also questioned about the file named ‘pizza’ but claimed it was unlikely he chose the name. ‘It is a strange word for me because I do not like pizza and I am allergic to cheese.’

Marc Brown, defending, said: ‘What the defendant would be saying is that he accepts responsibility for making the images on the exhibit. He was a prolific downloader of legal adult pornography.’

Mr Brown explained that of the roughly 33,000 images only around 0.5 per cent were illegal.

‘He would download material from the online forum 4chan in a zip format. He would download zip files containing various folders which contained pornographic material in bulk.

‘He did not deliberately seek out the material referred to in the indictment. The test is whether the defendant knew that the material he was downloading contained indecent material or was likely to contain indecent material.’

Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith adjourned sentencing for Deitch as he was not completely convinced by his defence.

The judge said: ‘I am going to order a pre-sentence report. There is no evidence of the search terms that the defendant used.

‘Child pornography forms a minute proportion of the materials saved by him and I am not satisfied that he deliberately sought it out. However I did not find his evidence very satisfactory.’

Judge Loraine-Smith mentioned that there was an element of denial in what Deitch had told him.

He warned Deitch that if he did not co-operate with the probation service and that if a report was not ready by his sentencing date that he would be committing a further offence.

‘I suggest that you are as full and frank as you can be with the probation service,’ the judge concluded.

Deitch has admitted two counts of making indecent photos of a child. He will return to Southwark Crown Court on May 19.

DEITCH’S ARTS CAREER IN PROFILE

Deitch spent 12 years at the BBC, rising to become head of acquired output.

He has also run the channel Bravo, and a number of other networks, and is now a senior figure at the International School of Screen Acting.

His profile on the school’s website describes him as an ‘Agent and Casting Director’.

The profile adds that he has ‘consulted for every major UK TV station and many international broadcasters and producers’.

He has also worked with a several drama schools as a tutor and casting agent.

Jimmy Savile would have been vetted by MI5 as far back as the 1960s – and Bond, Moneypenny, M etc would have continued vetting him until at least the 1980s.

Well, obviously the Telegraph doesn’t now say as much – because that might prove to be a tad too uncomfortable for its pro-establishment readership – but it did reveal in an article it printed back in 2006 that staff at the BBC, including reporters, newsreaders and presenters, were all vetted by MI5.

That clearly would have included the BBC’s star presenter Jimmy Savile.

Which rather begs this question:

Were the nation’s finest spies so incompetent they didn’t discover what apparently everyone else knew about Savile’s fondness for abusing children, or did they consider abusing children not a good enough reason to bar someone from employment?

I think we should be told. Don’t you?

Jimmy Savile: Secret of BBC’s first sex scandal

Top disc jockeys and executives at the BBC were caught up in a sex scandal more than 40 years ago.

Orgies were arranged involving BBC staff, call girls and others at the house of a brothel-keeper in Kensington in west London. From behind a two-way mirror, other executives and celebrities looked on.

Prostitutes were also provided at hotels and other locations in the West End.

The claims, dating back to 1971, shocked the public, and the police launched an investigation into what became known as the “payola” scandal.

Tell me a bit about how you came up with the original concept for Jim’ll Fix It.

Jim (Savile): Right, yes, all those years ago I was doing Top of the Pops’ quite happily. I was walking down a corridor, in television centre, and the great Bill Cotton who was the head of light entertainment was walking the other way, when he said, ‘here, listen, you’ve been fixing things for people all your life why don’t we put some pictures to it?’. I said, ‘alright then’, and that’s how it came up.

Barely a month later the girl who dreamed of being a dancer died

At the time of Claire’s death, a Sunday newspaper claimed that her diary contained a record of associations with several top BBC disc jockeys and show business personalities, all of whom she alleged had “used her” for their own sexual gratifications.

In light of the much publicised sex scandal involving Savile, Claire’s diary sparked interest, as it suggested she may have been a victim of the former Top of the Pops presenter’s alleged predatory sexual advances.

The Mirror last night published memos in which the BBC’s Assistant Head of Variety Tony Preston, reportedly told Assistant Solicitor George Derrick and Head of Light Entertainment Bill Cotton about the allegations made by Miss McAlpine.

Funny how when you play three degrees of separation with these people, they’re never far from a nonce.

…Another fun fact about Bill Cotton: he is (related to) Fearne Cotton, the television presenter. There are lots of fun facts about Fearne, according to Wikipedia. Here are just a few

Fearne Cotton began her career with CITV in 1998, when she presented The Disney Club at 17 years of age. (Shades of Britney Spears etc. MK-Ultra anyone?)

She’s presented such shows as Top of the Pops, Red Nose Day and the BBC’s Royal Wedding and Jubilee Coverage, and conducted a fawning interview with Princes William and Harry. She also hosted The Xtra Factor, a spin-off of Simon Cowell’s X-Factor.

And – a fact curiously absent from her Wikipedia her former boyfriend is Ian Watkins, lead singer of the band Lostprophets, who in December 2012 was charged with conspiracy to rape a one-year old baby girl.

The offences included the attempted rape of an 11-month old child as well as encouraging a fan to abuse her baby via webcam.

Police also found a stash of child porn videos – some of which he had made himself.

The author, a Conservative party member in the 1980s, says the information was gathered from two former Tory MPs – Sir Victor Raikes  MP for Southeast Essex and Anthony Courtney –  a leading member of the Conservative Monday Club.[1]

Both are now dead and as a result are unable to confirm they provided the information which appears in the document. However, handwritten notes said to have been compiled during discussions with the MPs in the 1980s are also also in the file.

Geoffrey Dickens is thought to have passed at least two “dossiers” to Lord Brittan in 1983 and early 1984.

He also met Lord Brittan to push the case for strengthening the laws on importing child abuse material and he urged the home secretary to ban the Paedophile Information Exchange – a group which campaigned for the legalisation of sex with children.

Why haven’t the police published their investigation of Dover customs officer’s claims of Brittan on video?

Later, when doorstepped, Solanki admitted that the minister in the video was Leon Brittan.

The Truth Shall Make You Free Fret

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

LEON BRITTAN AND THE INDEPENDENT INQUIRY INTO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

The much-delayed Independent Child Sexual Abuse Inquiry hearings into the Westminster paedophilia allegations finally began this morning with a lengthy opening statement by its lead counsel, Brian Altman QC.

Full disclosure: I provided a written submission to the Inquiry, which has now been issued to the Core Participants in the Westminster hearings. I have previously published my submission on this blog and do so again below.

Much of Mr. Altman’s opening speech was devoted to the historical context in which sensational claims, made in Parliament and in the media, led the Home Office to set up IICSA. This happened, as he noted, way back in March 2015 when Theresa May was still Home Secretary.

Although – in Mr. Altman’s own words – the Inquiry offers “an unprecedented opportunity to examine the extent to which institutions and organisations in England & Wales have taken seriously their responsibility to protect children”, he stressed that it would not “make findings as to whether individual allegations of child sexual abuse that have been made against Westminster figures are true. That is a matter for the police and for the courts.”  Instead, it would examine whether the various political and governmental organisations had handled the claims appropriately.

Not for the first time in the vexed history of government-ordered child sexual abuse enquiries, this poses a fundamental and logically insoluble problem. If no verdict is reached on whether the allegations were accurate, how can any sensible conclusion be reached on whether official responses to them were appropriate ?

The same conundrum affected – badly – the judge-led Inquiry into the 1987 Cleveland Child Abuse Crisis. Under the remit imposed on Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, this was forbidden from deciding whether any of the 121 children involved had been sexually abused; instead its £5 million investigations were tasked with reporting on how the allegations had been handled.

This is the stuff of madness: IICSA, like Butler-Sloss before it, is spending vast sums of taxpayers’ money on considering the probity of official responses to a substantial elephant in the room, whilst being prohibited from considering whether or not the elephant actually existed.

There is also a second and rather more specific problem. Since at least some of those “Westminster figures” about whom allegations have been – very publicly – made are now dead, there is absolutely no prospect of any police or judicial verdict on their guilt or innocence. IICSA is all there is. And that leads us on to the curious case of Leon Brittan, former occupant of Theresa May’s old desk at the Home Office.

Mr. Brittan was one of the central figures in the tangled and multiple skeins of media claims.   The most prominent of these were very loudly trumpeted by the now-defunct independent website, Exaro News and – in particular – its soi-disant “editor in Chief”, Mark Watts .  In December 2013 Exaro and Mr. Watts claimed that detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s twin operations Fairbank and Fernbridge had “seized a video that places a former Cabinet minister at one of several parties where boys were sexually abused by men … Exaro has also learned that police have ‘talked to’ the ex-minister about his attendance a the sex party”. [The original webpage for this Exaro story is no longer functioning].

The story was picked up and subsequently reported by rather more mainstream news organisations. Although Exaro did not name the ex-minister, it was common knowledge amongst journalists (and on social media) that the man identified and allegedly interviewed by detectives was Leon Brittan – then still alive.

In March 2014, Exaro and the Sunday Express followed this up with a further story.  They claimed hat in 1982 H.M. Customs and Excise had seized a videotape which showed “child abuse in the presence of a former cabinet minister”.   Once again, Mr. Brittan was not named , but every journalist and Twitter follower of what Mr. Watts called “undoubtedly, the biggest political scandal in post-war Britain” knew he was the politician allegedly involved.

I interviewed one of the senior officers in Operation Fairbank/Fernbridge after each of these stories broke. He insisted – vehemently – that neither was remotely true.   Instead he told me that his officers had gathered different – and potentially far more damning – information suggesting prime facie evidence that Leon Brittan had an interest in child sexual abuse. I published the story on these officer’s claims this blog on 4 August, 2015. [“The Politician, The Paedophiles & The Press: The Long Strange Saga of Leon Brittan”: it is still there to be read by those with the stamina to scroll back through the posts].

His evidence rested on two planks. The first was an interview the detective said his team had carried out with the Customs officer identified in the Exaro story. This man had told Fernbridge’s officers that the tapes seized in 1982 did not depict the former cabinet minister and that he had made this clear to the Exaro and Express journalists. A tape recording of that encounter, which I obtained, transcribed and published, bore him out.

However, he also volunteered to the officers that on another occasion he had stopped a man who he believed to be Leon Brittan at Dover customs and had seized child pornography from him.   He had reported this to his superiors and suggested that Fernbridge locate the Customs seizure logs. The detective I spoke to in 2014 told me that this line of enquiry was on-going.

The second thread of evidence relating to Mr. Brittan concerned Elm Guest House, the much-discussed B&B for gay men, closed after a police raid in 1982. According to the Fernbridge officer, a young boy had been found on the premises on the night of the raid and in an interview with a police officer and social worker had told them not to worry about the abuse he had suffered because “Uncle Leon” from “the Big House” would sort everything out.

Operation Fernbridge got this information – so the detective said – from the police officer, but was surprised to find that the boy’s (unsigned) written statement made no mention of “Uncle Leon”. The team then tracked down the boy – now in his early 40s; he initially agreed to speak to them, but subsequently refused to do so. Nonetheless, the senior officer who I interviewed told me that he was convinced Leon Brittan had an active sexual interest in children.

The opening statement today by Brian Altman QC incudes the following notable statement in its section on Elm Guest House.

“It appeared that one boy, aged 10, had been sexually abused on the premises. The boy made a statement to the police that he had been raped by adult males at the house. A social worker claimed that the boy made an allegation in relation to ‘Uncle Leon’.”

[Transcript; Page 8].

There is no follow-up to this remarkable passage in any of Mr. Altman’s published remarks. It is simply left there to dangle in the wind. And yet it seems to establish as a finding of fact at least one section of the story the Fernbridge detective told me.

I made clear in my published story that I had no means to establish the accuracy of what the senior Fernbridge officer said – though he seemed to have no motive to be making it up. However, in my submission to IICSA, which detailed all of his allegations, I urged the Inquiry to interview the detective and the Customs officer. I stressed that the latter was in his late 80s and in failing health and that therefore time was of the essence.  The published IICSA timetable for the first week of the Westminster hearings does not include either of their names. Nor does it include mine. Although I repeatedly asked to give oral evidence to support my lengthy written submission, its lawyers refused to allow me to do so. They also declined to give an explanation for this.

If the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse is serious in its ambition to establish facts of this highly-polarized controversy it must allow the evidence to be heard – and tested – in public. The Fernbridge detective and the Customs officer must be called to testify and their claims about Leon Brittan must be examined.

To do otherwise is to ignore the fundamental question about the elephant in the room. And that is fair neither to the public, which is footing the bill to find out the truth, or to now-deceased politicians such as Leon Brittan who cannot defend themselves.

Why was Op Midland underfunded? Only £2 million – Madeleine McCann investigation £12 million.

There is a massive discrepancy between the Police watchdog on the Met and Henriques report. I’m highly suspicious!

Nov 11

Was Police Investigation into Operation Midland a Whitewash?

Readers will note that the report looks specifically at the allegations from one “Nick” and ignores any others. Moreover, it cites errors in procedure in dealing with his accusations over and above those of any the others. They were numerous yet this report looks only at the allegations made by one individual. As such it reeks of a whitewash.

For example it notably fails to specifically mention the allegation of rape made against Leon Brittan. Those claims have been further corroborated by friends of the rape victim. Yet these been have now been dismissed without police looking at them specifically because the veracity of complaints from one alleged victim has been called into question.

Suspicions that a whitewash is underway were first aroused by a BBC investigation into the allegations, which also tried to dismiss the claims in a Panorama documentary.

The fact that senior police officers have now joined with the BBC and a retired judge, who headed the report, suggests that the British establishment is engaged in a full scale damage control exercise.

College statement following Sir Richard Henriques Review

David Tucker, Crime Lead at the College of Policing said: “Great effort has gone into building public trust in police investigations and we know from research, and lessons from the past, that a key reason why people do not report abuse is a fear of not being believed. To start an investigation from a position of doubt is unlikely to encourage victims to come forward.

“Existing guidance says that when an allegation is received, police should believe this account and record it as a crime, unless there is credible evidence at the point the allegation is made that determines no crime has been committed. It is the credibility of the evidence, not solely the victim, which should be investigated.

“In respect of anonymity for suspects, in 2013 the College published guidance which was clear about the need to respect the rights of a suspect. It says the names or identifying details of those who are arrested or suspected of a crime should not be released save in circumstances such as a threat to life or where a crime may be detected or prevented. Any decision to release these details should be made at a chief officer level.

“As part of the police effort to build trust with those abused, the term ‘victim’ is used in line with statutory guidance, legislation and the Victims Code of Practice which sets out the measures required to support victims, particularly those who are vulnerable.
“As the professional body for the police, we will now carefully review the findings of this report.”

Report – Independent Review of Metropolitan Police Service’s handling of non-recent sexual offence investigations

Metropolitan Police service to refer five officers in relation to Operation Midland

Nov 8, 2016Following today’s publication of the independent review by Sir Richard Henriques of the Metropolitan Police Service handling of non-recent sexual offence investigations alleged against persons of public prominence, IPCC Deputy Chair Rachel Cerfontyne said:

“We were advised earlier today that the Metropolitan Police is to refer the conduct of five officers, ranging in rank from sergeant to deputy assistant commissioner, to the IPCC in relation to Operation Midland. We understand the conduct of a deputy assistant commissioner will also be referred to the IPCC regarding a different operation.

“We have assembled an assessment team to analyse relevant documentation to be supplied by the force, and provide me with a recommendation. Once I receive that recommendation, I will decide whether there will be an investigation and, if so, what form that investigation will take. I am aware of the significant public interest in these matters and I will announce that decision once I have made it and all concerned parties have been notified.

“We have not received any complaints from individuals who may feel they were adversely affected by the actions of officers involved in Operation Midland but, as in all cases, were such complaints to be referred to the IPCC they would be given due consideration.”

Update

October 5 2016,

The Metropolitan Police has rejected calls for the full release of an independent review into its investigation of a VIP paedophile ring.

Assistant Commissioner Helen King said that it was her “strong expectation” that the retired judge’s review of Operation Midland would not be published in its entirety because it contains confidential material.

Public figures caught up in the inquiry believe that transparency is key to the Met learning lessons and that anything less would be a cover-up.

“Fat Cat Barrister” Judge Richard Henriques – Sympathetic and lenient towards paedophiles. He is a member of the establishment and was a friend/protege of George Carman QC who defended/protected Greville Janner and other child rapists…perfect safe pair of hands for the establishment.

A former High Court judge Sir Richard Henriques is to examine the way historical allegations against public figures are investigated, after a request from the head of the Metropolitan Police.

Sir Richard Henriques is to conduct the review, which will be published later this year and will “focus on police procedures and will not reach judgements on the evidence”.

Sir Richard Henriques’ Outrageous ruling: Paedophile allowed to move in opposite to the 12 yr-old girl he abused because he posed no risk and it would be a hardship for the paedophile!

Judge Richard Henriques claimed paedophile was no risk to victim when allowing him to move in opposite her

December 09, 2014

A PAEDOPHILE living opposite a girl he sexually assaulted was allowed to move back in to his home because Judge Richard Henriques ruled that he (the paedophile) would otherwise suffer “hardship“.

The reasons behind the judge’s decision to lift an order banning the man from living near his victim have been revealed after a transcript of a Court of Appeal hearing was released to the Crawley News.

It has also been revealed that Crawley Borough Council gave the child sex attacker a £75,000 discount when he bought the home in Broadfield.  (Why!)

We revealed last week how the council had allowed the man to buy his council-rented home while the case against him was ongoing.

The victim’s mother has slammed the judge, Sir Richard Henriques, for putting the rights of a convicted paedophile above those of her daughter, who was 12 when she was assaulted.

She said: “How would it be causing him hardship? He was living with his mum and dad when he was banned from living in this street, so it’s not like he would be left on the streets.

“What about my daughter? There has been no thought for her at all.

“He is the one that’s committed the crime and she’s the one who’s going to end up suffering, because we’re going to have to move.”

Judge Henriques ruled that the man, who cannot be named because it could identify the girl, may suffer hardship if he was denied the opportunity to live in his house.

Judge Henriques ruled that a remaining condition – that he cannot contact his victim – would be enough to protect her from harm, adding that the man does not pose a serious risk to other children in the street.

The girl’s mother believes that judgement was “ridiculous”.

She said: “He still poses a risk to my daughter and yet they’ve moved him back into the same street.

Sir Richard Henriques QC

His  Friend and Mentor was George Carman QC

Sir Richard Henriques speaking about George Carman:

George Carman and Christopher Rose were the giants of advocacy. George spent so much time socialising he knew how to talk to juries. It was a gift. I saw him through pupillage in my early years. He was a friend, came to our wedding

Sir Richard Henriques regarded the late George Carman Lord Janner’s barrister when he was first investigated for sex crimes in 1991, as a friend and mentor at the Bar, a report in The Times claims.

Judge Richard Henriques’ friend,George Carman QC, defended/protected  VIP/Establishment Child Sexual Abusers – Cyril Smith, Jimmy Savile, Greville Janner…

Mentor George Carman

George Carman used to frequent “rather seedy bars where he would fraternize with criminals and all sorts and it was said ‘He would drink with anybody.’ He would come home drunk and violently abuse his wife.”

The late George Carman, Blackpool born libel lawyer to the stars.

Michael Crick describes how Dominic Carman, son of George Carman QC who successfully defended Jeremy Thorpe in the murder trial, told him that only…

…a few weeks before the trial, allegations about Cyril Smith were circulating and George Carman QC got onto his legal friends, with Thorpe’s backing, to basically frighten the Fleet street editors into not picking up the Rochdale Alternative Press story about Cyril Smith.

From the 1990s onwards, Carman specialised in libel. The first was Tessa Sanderson in 1990, but after that the famous libels came thick and fast – Robert Maxwell, Richard Branson, Edwina Currie, Gillian Taylforth, Imran Khan, Elton John, Tom Cruise, Jonathan Aitken.

In 2001 the Purdews of Champneys (friends of Sir Jimmy Savile and Keith Vaz) briefly acquired Inglewood health hydro from agents of Saudi prince Mohammed bin Fahd. Inglewood had been the scene of allegations, published in the Guardian six years earlier, that then defence minister Jonathan Aitken, a director of the spa, had tried to arrange girls for a Saudi prince and his entourage.

The report led to the notorious libel action brought by Aitken ultimately culminating in his being sentenced to jail for perjury.

Former Tory MP Jonathan Aitken, once a director of Champneys Inglewood. He was accused by former employees of acting as a ‘pimp’ by requesting call girls, once for a sheikh and once for a group of Arabs.

Then he was embroiled in a legal dispute with former brothel keeper Lindi ‘Miss Whiplash’ St Clair, who claimed that she was thrown out of Inglewood partway through a course.

And though Aitken met his future wife Lolicia at Inglewood, he also cheated on her with bondage prostitute Paula Strudwick, telling her to collect the right sort of birch branches from the woods outside the estate for sadomasochistic sex games. You’d have thought someone would have twigged what was going on.

George Carman also involved in these cases:

The James Bulger case and Harold Shipman case, Dr Leonard Arthur, the paediatrician accused of murdering a Down’s syndrome baby; PIE member, Geoffrey Prime, the Cheltenham spy; a Russian-speaking civil servant charged with spying. He was  a paedophile with detailed card-index files of little girls in the Cheltenham and Gloucester area, the family of God’s banker, Roberto Calvi, who wanted – and, thanks to George Carman, got – the suicide verdict reversed; Peter Adamson, who played Len Fairclough in Coronation Street, acquitted of the charge of indecent assault on two girls;

…when he threatened newspapers with libel action over child abuse. In the Guardian, Dominic Carman, the son of the late George Carman QC, writes:

In 1992, my father, George Carman QC, had been retained by Savile’s lawyers over a different matter, which never reached court. By 1994, the name Carman, and what he could do in cross-examination, put such fear into the minds of litigants, lawyers and editors that  libel cases were settled and, in some circumstances, perhaps stories were not published.

…the editor of the Sunday Mirror in 1994, did have “credible and convincing” evidence from two women who claimed that Jimmy Savile had been guilty of abusing them at a children’s home.

the paper’s lawyers “totally and utterly convinced” they were telling the truth

……………………………………………………….

When Carman moved to London in his fifties, he was invited to join the Garrick, but spent much more time at Aspinall’s and the Rififi and a host of low-grade drinking clubs. His drinking and gambling were well known to his colleagues – the real dirty secret was his wife-beating. Dominic Carman has interviewed all three Mrs Carmans, including his mother, Celia, who was Carman‘s second wife and the only one to have any sort of normal sex-life with him. The other two marriages were unconsummated. Dominic says he had at least one longstanding homosexual affair

Update: Met Police Investigation of Former Israeli ambassador Daniel Taub

Married father-of-six Daniel Taub, a 55-year-old Oxford-educated lawyer, served in London from 2011 until last year during which time officials repeatedly raised concerns over security breaches at his home in St John’s Wood, north London. Several sources told the Guardian that Mr Taub returned to Israel after the visits continued.

His name emerged following days of speculation in Israel over the identity of a senior Israeli diplomat who had become embroiled in an alleged scandal.

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had strongly denied claims that appeared online in Israel on Wednesday relating to allegations of aspects of Mr Taub’s behaviour, insisting it had determined that there had been “no criminal or disciplinary” wrongdoing.

The ministry “expressed its disgust at the publication of untruthful allegations regarding one of the finest members of its foreign service”.

It said in a statement: “The ministry emphasises that following a thorough investigation by the inspector general of the ministry, it was determined that there had been no criminal or disciplinary wrongdoing and that the issue related to a breach of security protocol. The issue has been addressed and concluded.”

No Jewish groups were willing to comment on the allegations on Thursday, preferring to adopt a “wait and see” approach.

The alleged circumstances of Mr Taub’s departure emerged amid controversy over whether he should be appointed as the Israeli foreign affairs ministry’s chief legal counsel – a post for which he is regarded as the leading contender.

Israel’s Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has reportedly backed him for that post.

After more than two decades spent at the heart of negotiations between Israel and Palestine, including the role of deputy legal counsel for his foreign affairs ministry, the Finchley-born diplomat was considered a cool, unflappable candidate for a high-profile foreign posting.

On his arrival in London the Jewish Chronicle called him “an almost copperplate ideal Anglo-Jew”, having attended Menorah Primary School in north London and then Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School in Elstree, Hertfordshire.

His rise through the Anglo-Jewish establishment continued at Oxford University, where the future Conservative leader and Foreign Secretary William Hague was a contemporary with the pair coming into contact through the Oxford Union, prior to completing his studies at Harvard. He gave up his UK citizenship following his emigration to Israel in 1989 and in the space of a few years was considered an authority on humanitarian law, international organisations and counterterrorism.

Mr Taub was involved as an official in both negotiations on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, in almost every signed agreement throughout the 1990s, and a member of Israel’s negotiating team in the Israel-Syrian negotiations in January 2000.

His time in London was considered a resounding success. Announcing his departure last year, the Israeli Embassy said Mr Taub had overseen the improvement of bilateral trade between the countries in addition to the deepening academic, business and cultural ties.

Mr Taub said that it had been an “extraordinary privilege” to represent Israel in the UK “to help deepen the friendship and cooperation.”

Mr Taub, who was only the second native-born Briton to serve as Israel’s ambassador to the UK, had formally completed his four-year term in June last year, but applied to extend his posting for another year and told people he would be staying. Israel had other ideas and will be sending Mark Regev, Mr Netanayhu’s former foreign language spokesman, in his place with his arrival due next month.

Mr Regev is already well-known in the UK after numerous appearances in the media defending Israel’s military action – most notably during Operation Cast Lead, the 2008-9 conflict that resulted in 13 Israeli and at least 1,166 Palestinian deaths.

“Usually when you see me, it’s bad news,” the Australian-born sharp-suited spokesman quipped during one appearance.

Praised by hard-line supporters of Israeli governments, he has been vilified for “defending the indefensible” in numerous high-profile interviews repeatedly calling UN efforts to investigate alleged war crimes by the Israeli army “a kangaroo court”.

“It’s not difficult to be a spokesman when things are stable, things are good”, a British diplomat told the Independent last year following the announcement of his new posting. “What Regev brings is the ability to hold the line when there is bad publicity, as has often been the case, of course, with Israel.”

That experience will be needed once more should evidence emerge to support the allegations surrounding his predecessor’s departure.

The Metropolitan Police are said to be investigating the involvement of at least one minor, after a complaint by a police officer who says he witnessed a trail of male adults and possible minors entering the embassy late at night.

Taub claims that the accusation is vindictive and denies the presence of any children; the visits, he maintains, were “therapeutic”.

Thursday, 04 February 2016

Daniel Taub, the former Israeli ambassador in London, has been named as the subject of an investigation into possible sexual abuse of minors and homosexual affairs that threatened Israel’s national security. The news was broken by the tenacious blogger Richard Silverstein – after Israeli newspapers only reported that a “European ambassador” was under suspicion. Silverstein has been mauled online by defenders of Taub but, as usual, is holding up well and standing by his allegation.

Following Silverstein’s scoop, the Guardian’s Peter Beaumont in Jerusalem picked up on the story, although he declined to report on the exact nature of the allegations. Haaretz and Ynet have also reported on the case, with Haaretz correspondent Amir Oren claiming that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu knew about the scandal last summer.

Coming to the end of his four year term in London, the married ambassador reportedly bragged to colleagues that he expected to remain in Britain on a special one -year extension. It appears, though, that he was recalled to Tel Aviv as a direct result of these allegations.

The Israeli foreign ministry has investigated and closed the case, but it now seems to have been re-opened. The primary concern of the Israeli government is that the visitors to the embassy were not registered, and that MI5 appears to have been aware of the arrangements. Ambassadors engaging in extramarital relationships are prime targets for blackmail, which would be of great concern to the Israeli security services. Taub was also inexperienced; his appointment in 2011 was resented by the Israeli diplomatic service, which noted that someone who had never held an ambassadorial role before was getting a very important posting.

This is a controversial situation and it is important not to presume guilt ahead of innocence, but the facts raise concerns and speak to a far wider problem. It is not the first time that an Israeli ambassador has been linked to accusations of child abuse…

Scandal after scandal in both London and Washington have seen reported instances of drug smuggling, kidnapping, abuse of staff and alleged sexual assaults, all of which is quietly hushed up.

This is about people of power abusing their privilege to conduct activities that any ordinary person can clearly see are wrong.

Ambassador Taub’s current difficulties should concern us all, not just his bosses in Tel Aviv.

Daniel Taub to join Israeli philanthropic foundation

Former envoy to UK takes break from foreign ministry to join Yad Hanadiv focused on education and Arab communities

May 31, 2016

Former Israeli Ambassador Daniel Taub is to take a break from the foreign ministry after a quarter of a century to join a leading philanthropic foundation.

The veteran diplomat’s 25 years in the ministry has included a spell as principal deputy legal advisor and playing a role in negotiations with the Palestinians and Syria. He had previously been tipped for the chief legal counsel role in the ministry after returning to Jerusalem from London last year.

But it was announced today that he will take up a role with Yad Hanadiv as director of strategy and planning.

The organisation – which acts on behalf of a number of Rothschild family philanthropic trusts – currently focuses its grant making on education, academic excellence and the Arab community.

It emerged earlier this year Taub was subject to an internal ministry probe over unauthorised visitors to his residence in London , which concluded there had been no “criminal or disciplinary wrongdoing and that the issue related to a breach of security protocol”.
Congratulating him on his appointment, the Foreign Ministry said: “Daniel is an outstanding and valued diplomat and lawyer and we hope to see him playing further roles in Israeli diplomacy in the future.” The ministry said allegations made against Taub in the past had been “thoroughly investigated and dismissed”.

Yad Hanadiv’s website says it is “dedicated to creating resources for advancing Israel as a healthy, vibrant, democratic society, committed to Jewish vales and equal opportunity for the benefit of all inhabitants, carrying forward the philanthropic tradition of the Rothschild family”.

Lord Rothschild discusses cousin’s crucial role in ‘miracle’ Balfour Declaration

Speaking ahead of the 67-word letter’s centenary, Jacob Rothschild describes the historic declaration which paved the way for Israel’s existence

 February 8, 2017

Lord Rothschild being interviewed by ex-ambassador Daniel Taub

The current and fourth Lord Rothschild has described the Balfour Declaration that helped pave the way for the creation of Israel as a “miracle” and revealed new details about his cousin Dorothea’s crucial role.

Speaking ahead of the 67-word letter’s centenary, they are his first ever public comments on the show of support from then-foreign secretary Lord Balfour to the second Lord Rothschild, his eccentric uncle Walter, and were made in a rare TV interview with former Israeli ambassador Daniel Taub as part of the Balfour 100 project.

Jacob Rothschild, 80, head of the family’s banking dynasty, said the declaration of support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine went through five drafts before finally being penned on 2 November 1917, adding: “It was the greatest event in Jewish life for thousands of years, a miracle… It took 3,000 years to get to this.”

The way it was achieved was extraordinary, he said. “It was the most incredible piece of opportunism. You had an impoverished would-be scientist, Chaim Weizmann, who somehow gets to England, meets a few people, including members of my family, seduces them, he has such charm and conviction, he gets to Balfour, and unbelievably, he persuades Lord Balfour, and Lloyd George, the prime minister, and most of the ministers, that this idea of a national home for Jews should be allowed to take place. I mean it’s so, so unlikely.”

The letter “changed the course of history for the Middle East and the Jewish people,” said Taub, who interviewed Rothschild at Waddeston Manor in Buckinghamshire, a country pile bequeathed to the nation by the family in 1957, where the Declaration is kept.

It was written to Walter Rothschild, a naturalist and collector, who was first and foremost interested in ornithology (the study of birds), said Jacob, and a “deeply eccentric man who rode around Tring Park on giant tortoises and whose carriage was pulled by zebras.

Walter only became interested in Zionism in later life, but Rothschild said he had been “deeply committed to Israel since the 1960s and have been there every year since”.

However, he said his family at the time was divided on the idea of Israel, noting that some members “didn’t think it was a good thing that this national home be established there”.

He also revealed for the first time the role of his cousin Dorothy de Rothschild, who acted as a critical go-between while still in her teens. Describing her as “devoted to Israel,” Rothschild said: “What she did, which was crucially important, was to connect Weizmann to the British establishment, and extraordinarily, she told Weizmann how to integrate, how to insert himself into British establishment life, which he learned very quickly.”

Her letters, which are stored at Waddeston, detail her later dealings with a range of Zionist leaders, and her advice on the organisation of the Zionist Conference, and Rothschild said she had a profound effect on him, introducing him to Israel and the family’s philanthropic foundation in 1962.

The Balfour Declaration led to the expulsion of Palestinians. (Wikimedia Commons)

Arthur James Balfour will, no doubt, be praised effusively by supporters of Israel in the coming weeks for a brief document he signed 100 years ago.

As Britain’s foreign secretary in November 1917, Balfour declared his backing to the Zionist colonization project. Through his declaration, Britain became the imperial sponsor of a Jewish state – euphemistically called a “Jewish national home” – that would be established in Palestine by expelling its indigenous people en masse.

An assurance in that document about protecting Palestinian rights proved worthless. Balfour himself was quite happy to negate that assurance.

In 1919, he argued that Zionist aspirations were “of far profounder import than the desires and prejudices of the 700,000 Arabs who now inhabit that ancient land.”

Rather than being marked “with pride,” as Theresa May, the current British prime minister, has promised, the centenary of the Balfour Declaration ought to be a time for sober reflection. One useful exercise would be to examine Balfour’s wider record of violence and racism.

From 1887 to 1891, Balfour headed Britain’s administration in Ireland. On his appointment to that post, Balfour proposed to combine repression and reform.

The repression he advocated should be as “stern” – in his words – as that of Oliver Cromwell, the English leader who invaded Ireland in 1649. Cromwell’s troops are reviled in Ireland for the massacres they carried out in the towns of Wexford and Drogheda.

Siding with the gentry against what he called the “excitable peasantry,” Balfour prioritized repression over reform. When a rent strike was called in 1887, Balfour authorized the use of heavy-handed tactics against alleged agitators.

Three people died after police fired on a political protest in Mitchelstown, County Cork. The incident earned him the nickname of “Bloody Balfour.”

Blessings of civilization?

Balfour penalized dissent. Thousands were jailed under the Irish Crimes Act that he introduced.

John Mandeville, a nationalist campaigner, was one of the first to be imprisoned during Balfour’s stint in Ireland. Mandeville died soon after his release and a coroner’s inquest attributed his death to ill-treatment suffered while in detention.

Balfour tried to smear Mandeville by claiming he had taken part in a “drunken row” before suddenly falling ill. Mandeville, according to some accounts, was actually a teetotaler.

Balfour was a British and a white supremacist. “All the law and all the civilization in Ireland is the work of England,” he once said.

He used similar terms while defending the subjugation of other peoples. In 1893, he spoke in the British parliament of how Cecil Rhodes, an imperial marauder in Southern Africa, was “extending the blessings of civilization.”

While serving as prime minister from 1902 to 1905, Balfour insisted that Europeans must enjoy greater privileges than Black natives in South Africa. “Men are not born equal,” he said in 1904.

Two years later – then in opposition – he said that Black people were “less intellectually and morally capable” than whites.

Callous

There are strong reasons to suspect that Balfour was also anti-Semitic. In 1905, he pushed legislation aimed at preventing Jews fleeing persecution in Russia from entering Britain on the grounds they were “undesirable.”

One reason why Balfour may have been in favor of establishing a Jewish state in Palestine was that he disliked having Jews as neighbors. He once described Zionism as a “serious effort to mitigate the age-old miseries created for western civilization by the presence in its midst of a body which is too long regarded as alien and even hostile, but which it was equally unable to expel or absorb.”

Balfour was often callous. He tried to justify the use of Chinese slave labor in South Africa’s gold mines and atrocities committed by British forces in the Sudan. He opposed giving aid to people at risk of famine in India.

Despite his apparent commitment to law and order, Balfour encouraged illegal behavior when it suited him. He was a staunch supporter of militant loyalists who insisted that Ireland’s north-eastern counties should not become independent from Britain.

When the Ulster Volunteer Force managed to smuggle 30,000 rifles from Germany into the north of Ireland, Balfour effectively approved the 1914 gun-running operation by telling the British parliament: “I hold now, and I held 30 years ago that if home rule was forced upon Ulster, Ulster would fight and Ulster would be right.”

It was extraordinary that a former prime minister should voice approval for subversion. Yet that stance did no harm to Balfour’s political career.

Within a few years, he was back in government as foreign secretary – it was in that role that he issued his declaration on Palestine.

The effects of that declaration were swift and far-reaching. Through pressure exerted by Chaim Weizmann (later Israel’s first president) and other senior figures in the Zionist movement, it was enshrined in the League of Nations mandate through which Britain ruled Palestine between the two world wars.

Herbert Samuel, himself a staunch Zionist, introduced a system of racial and religious discrimination when he served as Britain’s first high commissioner for Palestine from 1920 to 1925. Those measures facilitated and financed the acquisition by European settlers of land on which Palestinians had lived and farmed for many generations. Mass evictions ensued: more than 8,700 Palestinians were expelled from villages in Marj Ibn Amer, an area in the Galilee, as they were bought up by Zionist colonizers during the 1920s.

Balfour was unperturbed by the upheaval that he set in motion. Worse, he denied that any problem existed.

In 1927, he wrote “nothing has occurred” that would cause him to question the “wisdom” of the declaration he signed a decade earlier.

The remark says much about Balfour’s hubris. He was prepared to trample on an entire people and to dismiss their grievances as irrelevant.

How a London theater became a BDS battleground

Israel’s UK ambassador and his allies in the British government viewed a 2014 row over the sponsorship of a film festival as a key battle against the Palestinian-led boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement, according to documents released under freedom of information rules.

London’s Tricycle Theatre had agreed to host the UK Jewish Film Festival that summer. The festival was partly funded by the Israeli embassy in London.

Yet with Gaza under a major attack, the venue’s board decided in August that it would not accept Israeli government sponsorship for the event.

After learning of the theater’s decision, Member of Parliament Sajid Javid, then Britain’s culture secretary, acted swiftly to have it overturned.

Amid a media uproar, he publicly described the theater’s decision as “misguided.” Privately, Javid also sought a meeting with Indhu Rubasingham, artistic director at the Tricycle, a detail not reported before now. He appears to have used the meeting to put pressure on the theater.

Javid later boasted that he had “made it absolutely clear” to the theater “what might happen to their funding if they, or if anyone, tries that kind of thing again.”

He appears to have threatened that the Tricycle could lose assistance it receives from the publicly funded Arts Council.

Praise from Israeli ambassador

Daniel Taub, then Israel’s ambassador in London, praised Javid for opposing the theater’s stance. Javid’s intervention “constituted an important statement at a time when calls for cultural boycotts and shutting down cultural ties are regrettably gathering stream,” Taub wrote, in a letter acquired under Britain’s freedom of information rules.

Protesting John Kerry at UMass

Chanelle John explains why activists decided to protest a commencement speaker.

EARLIER THIS year, a group of student activists, including members of Students Against Occupation and the International Socialist Organization, gathered at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) at Boston graduation ceremony to voice their opposition to the university’s choice of commencement speaker, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.).

The students aimed to generate dialogue and to educate the university community about our senator’s shameful record of supporting war and occupation–and to raise questions about the UMass administration’s undemocratic and questionable priorities.

The students did not intend to have a disruptive protest. They came to campus with fact sheets about Sen. Kerry and signs that said “Fund Education, Not Occupation” for graduating students to wear or hold during the ceremony. The activists were using the event to further their ongoing transparency campaign embodied in a petition that called for the university to make information about its investments available to the public. The student activists were immediately surrounded by police, silenced and kicked out, under threat of arrest.

Kerry, a Massachusetts senator who is chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has supported and continues to support the occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. These policies have not only destroyed those areas, but also continually drain critical tax revenue away from much needed domestic programs including the funding of public education, educational aid grants, veterans services and job programs.

The administration invited Daniel Taub, the top legal advisor to the Israeli Defense Forces, to speak on campus about what “really” happened in Gaza. They also invited Alan Dershowitz, a Harvard professor and globally notorious Zionist apologist for apartheid, who supports the destruction of Palestinian villages, inhumane torture that violates the Geneva Accords, and the execution of family members of suicide bombers.

Ambassador Taub praised Greville for being a “strategic asset for the state of Israel”. Among other speakers were Mick Davis (chairman of UJIA), Gerald Ronson (founder of CST), Doug Krikler (former Chief Executive of UJIA), Jon Mendelsohn (Chairman of Kinloss), and Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner (Head of Reform Movement, and Lord Janner’s daughter). The Chief Rabbi also sent warm wishes and said that “Greville, throughout your career you have bought a light of hope to the world. We salute you. We admire you. We thank you.”

Israeli ambassador was repeatedly warned over London security breaches

Daniel Taub, Israel’s most recent envoy to the UK, returned to Israel after officials raised late-night visits to official home

Israel’s most recent ambassador to the United Kingdom, Daniel Taub, returned home after being repeatedly warned over security breaches at his residence in St John’s Wood in north-west London, it has emerged.

According to several sources, the breaches related to late night visits by individuals to his official home. Israeli officials raised the visits with Taub. He returned to Israel after the visits continued.

Taub, who had applied to stay in London before his departure, was identified after a flurry of speculation in the Israeli media earlier this week over the identity of a senior Israeli diplomat in Europe who had become embroiled in a recent alleged scandal.

Israel’s ministry of foreign affairs, however, strongly denied claims that appeared online on Wednesday relating to allegations of aspects of Taub’s behaviour, insisting it had determined that there had been “no criminal or disciplinary” wrongdoing.

The circumstances of Taub’s departure from London last year have emerged amid controversy over whether he should be appointed as the Israeli foreign affairs ministry’s chief legal counsel – a post for which he is regarded as the leading contender with the reported backing of Israel’s prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu.

“The British security services asked the ambassador to cease the practice, which was hurting their ability to safeguard him. When it happened again, though, the security services made an official request to the embassy’s security officer.

“They warned that if the violations didn’t stop, they would no longer be able to take responsibility for guarding the ambassador and his residence. The embassy’s security officer relayed a report on the subject to the Shin Bet security service and the foreign ministry in Israel.”

An expert in international law, Taub is regarded as a high flier in the Israeli diplomatic service, having served as legal adviser to Israel’s missions to the UN in New York and Geneva.
