Porn lawyer charged in Brazil with child exploitation
July 24, 2002
An American lawyer who specialized in defending those accused of child pornography is under arrest in Brazil, charged with violating that country’s laws against child exploitation.
Lawrence Allen Stanley, 47, was arrested June 8 after police in Salvador say they found more than 1,000 photographs and more than 100 videos of young girls in swimsuits and underwear.
The arrest came days after the Brazilian magazine Epocha reported that Stanley, a fugitive who has lived in Brazil since 1998, had built an international business photographing Brazilian girls and selling their photos through the Internet. At a hearing July 8, a Brazilian federal judge ordered that Stanley remain in custody until trial after receiving the report of an investigation from Rita Sanchez, head of the Center for Human Rights. Stanley faces up to four years in prison if convicted.
Under the alias L.A. Stanaman, Stanley operated the “MiniModels” Web site, featuring photos of girls ages 8 to 14 in what police Officer Rui Gomes described to the Associated Press as “sensual poses.” Police said Stanley paid the girls $20 to $40 for each photo session. An official of the Brazilian Embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for information on Stanley’s case.
Stanley has been identified as the owner of Alessandra’s Smile, a New York company that sells erotic material about girls. He is also the publisher of Ophelia Editions, which produces books with pedophile themes, and Uncommon Desires, a newsletter that has called itself “the voice of a politically conscious girl-love underground.”Stanley has a criminal record. He was charged with “sexual aggression” against a girl in Quebec in 1990, but Canadian officials never sought extradition. In 1998, a Dutch court convicted Stanley in absentia for sexual abuse of three children ages 7 to 10, Epocha reported. He faces a three-year prison sentence if he returns to the Netherlands. Brazil has no extradition treaty with the Netherlands.
In 1989, federal authorities accused Stanley of conspiring with a client, photographer Don Marcus, to import child pornography. Marcus who fled to France to escape prosecution and is still a fugitive asked Stanley to pick up a suitcase that was found to contain child pornography. His attorney argued that Stanley did not know what was in the suitcase, and a jury acquitted him in 1993.
He has written several articles about child pornography, including one in 1987 in the Dutch pedophile journal Paidika. “Law enforcement officials have exaggerated the incidence of possession of child pornography,” Stanley said. “Only 14 percent depicted children engaged in sexual conduct with adults,” he said, referring to photos in child pornography magazines.
Those assertions were expanded by Stanley in a 1988 Playboy article, “The Child Pornography Myth,” in which he argued that pedophiles were a “small, essentially insignificant group.”
Stanley’s work was cited by Judith Levine in her recent book, “Harmful to Minors,” which several critics said promoted pedophilia. The Levine book was sold by one of Stanley’s Web sites, which praised it as an “important and compelling book” debunking “myths that adult attraction to children is a serious and pervasive threat.”
As lawyer in the mid-1990s, Stanley defended efforts by the North American Man Boy Love Association to operate as a tax-exempt group.
In 1998, U.S. Customs officials seized a large shipment of European nudist magazines addressed to Stanley’s company, Alessandra’s Smile. In 1999, a federal judge ruled the magazines obscene, but the decision was reversed by an appeals court. panel.

Barrister complains to police and BSB about another barrister’s unacceptable behaviour on Twitter
Jan 30 2017
Two barristers are locked in a very public spat after one accused the other of “enthusiastically” encouraging the abuse of an unnamed journalist online.Sarah Phillimore (pictured top left), who is a tenant at St John’s Chambers in Bristol, and Barbara Hewson (pictured top right), who is a member of 1 Gray’s Inn Square in London, are at loggerheads over Hewson’s social media etiquette. This according to The Times (£), which reported today that Phillimore has sent a letter to Hewson’s legal representatives complaining about her behaviour on Twitter. The letter stated:
Ms Hewson has enthusiastically encouraged such abuse [of the journalist] over many months and engaged in direct abuse and harassment [herself].
Confirming to Legal Cheek that she has filed complaints with both the police and Bar Standards Board (BSB), Phillimore continued:
I… believe I have clear evidence to support my contention that Ms Hewson’s online activities have serious and potentially criminal ramifications well beyond the issue of publication on Twitter. This is not acceptable behaviour from a practising barrister.
Returning fire, Irish-born Hewson — whose personal Twitter account now appears to have been “suspended” (screenshot below) — told the newspaper:
I object in the strongest possible terms to Ms Phillimore’s brinkmanship, making extraordinarily serious accusations in an unfocused way, without any supporting evidence. I and my legal team will robustly defend any civil or criminal proceedings that she, or any anyone else, initiates against me.
While the identity of the journalist remains a mystery, Legal Cheek understands that the Twitter bust-up and subsequent letter stems from the barristers’ differing views on child abuse cases. The report states that Hewson has instructed London-based media experts Simons Muirhead & Burton to defend any potential claim.
Responding to today’s report, the BSB told Legal Cheek:
The BSB does not comment as to whether or not individual barristers are the subject of a complaint or a disciplinary investigation. If a complaint is received, or if information about potential misconduct by a barrister comes to our attention, it is dealt with in accordance with the procedures set out in detail on our website.
This isn’t the first time Hewson and her online shenanigans have hit national headlines.
In 2015 the civil law barrister branded the now ex-deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland a “cunt” on Twitter. In another colourful tweet, she called on several of the site’s users to “get off my tits, you cunts.”
The experienced lawyer also received widespread criticism after she called for the age of sexual consent to be lowered to just 13. Penning an article for online magazine Spiked back in 2013, she said the move was necessary to end the “persecution of old men”.
Hewson did not respond to Legal Cheek’s request for comment.

Barrister ‘made death threats’ to student
April 12 2017
Barbara Hewson has been accused of online and other abuse. She came to prominence after calling for the age of consent to be lowered in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal
Police have issued a harassment warning to a barrister amid allegations that she waged a campaign of online bullying, abuse and “death threats” against a law student and another lawyer.
Barbara Hewson, 55, who came to prominence after the Jimmy Savile scandal when she called for the age of sexual consent to be substantially lowered, is the subject of mounting complaints to the Bar’s regulator.
At least three complaints have been lodged with the Bar Standards Board, The Times has learnt.
It has also emerged that Ms Hewson, a Court of Protection and human rights specialist, has within the past few weeks left her chambers, 1 Gray’s Inn Square, in London. The chambers, which is also home to the civil liberties lawyer Michael Mansfield, QC,…

Lawyer who was dubbed the ‘bolshiest barrister on Twitter’ and called for age of consent to be lowered to 13 ‘made death threats’ to law student
It is not the first time Miss Hewson has aroused controversy.
She caused outrage after the Jimmy Savile abuse allegations when she called for the age of consent to be lowered to 13 and for an end to the ‘persecution of old men’.
She has also questioned whether rape victims are ‘utterly innocent’ and suggested that they can have a ‘moral responsibility for the crime’.
Miss Hewson said rape victims had a ‘moral responsibility’ and cases were rarely straight forward where one party was ‘utterly guilty’ or ‘utterly innocent’.
And she described Scotland Yard’s investigations into historic sexual abuse as a ‘witch hunt’.
In September 2016 Miss Hewson said it was time to ‘put an end to the whole fiasco’. Writing for the Daily Mail, she called for the inquiry into historic abuse to be closed.

Explosive report into child sexual abuse at Croydon children’s home Shirley Oaks names 27 alleged paedophiles

Staff at the Shirley Oaks home, doctors, teachers, vicars and football coaches have all been named
An explosive report into sexual abuse and ‘widespread corruption’ at a Croydon children’s home includes the names of 27 people abuse survivors claim are paedophiles.
Shirley Oaks Survivors Association (SOSA) published the report today following its two-year-long investigation into child abuse inside south London’s care system.
Testimonies of more than 400 residents of children’s homes have been included in the findings, which were shared today at a conference in central London.
Staff at the Shirley Oaks home, doctors, teachers, vicars and football coaches have all been named in the report.
The report claims at least 60 paedophiles operated in the Wickham Road children’s home, and 27 alleged abusers have now been named.
“Shirley Oaks seemed to develop a model for paedophiles that worked. That was the ability to control the movement of children and that was replicated in Lambeth council.”
SOSA’s report claims 31 paedophiles were connected to the home or the authority, including Philip Temple, a former senior housefather at Rowan House at Shirley Oaks who was jailed for 12 years in August for abusing 12 young people over 25 years.
Michael Mansfield is representing the survivors.

A music teacher at a top private school subjected a girl to ‘vile’ bondage sessions and critiqued her sexual technique in the same he would her violin playing.
Married Dara de Cogan, now 58, had lusted after the girl – who was more than 30 years his junior and saw him as a ‘substitute father’ – since she was 13.
York Crown Court heard the girl was a gifted student at £33,000-a-year Ampleforth College, in North Yorkshire.
De Cogan, born in Ireland, was also a musician of international acclaim who was appointed Head of Strings at the boarding school, which boasts Rupert Everett and James Norton among its alumni, in 2004.
The married man, who has two adopted daughters, tutored her in the violin.

Ampleforth College, in North Yorkshire
The girl, now in her 20s, said in a victim impact statement read to the court that her musical ambitions after university had been thwarted by what she has gone through.
She added: ‘He took advantage of me in the most manipulative and vile way possible.
Judge Andrew Stubbs told him: ‘You took advantage of her immaturity, insecurity and innocence.

Dara de Cogan leaves York Crown Court to start his prison sentence for having sexual activity with a pupil
‘When parents send their children to school they entrust their most precious possession to the care and protection of others.
‘This was an abject failure of trust both in the college and you.’
De Cogan, of Kilburn village, North Yorkshire, admitted ten counts of sexual activity with a child while in a position of trust.
He was jailed for 28 months with half to be served and ordered to sign on a sex offenders register for ten years.
De Cogan bowed to the judge and smiled to his family before being handcuffed in the dock and taken into custody.
His wife of more than 25 years who sat in the public gallery was said by the defence to be standing by him.
Dublin-born De Cogan, became leader of the Irish Youth Orchestra in 1978 and represented his country in the European Community Youth Orchestra.
He started his music with legendary Irish violinist Mary Gallagher and continued his studies at the Royal College of Music with Jaraslav Vanecek.
In 1982, he joined the Hall Orchestra in Manchester and became Principal Second Violin in 1986.
During his time in Manchester, he worked extensively with special needs children particularly with the Royal Schools for the Deaf. (the current queen is its patron.)
The Royal Schools has some 78 children – It is claimed that the Royal Schools for the Deaf in Cheadle Hulme had a culture of neglect. Social services in Stockport, the borough in which the school is based, received a number of allegations from former members of staff.

Alongside his orchestral work, he ran his own Irish band, Delginis, and was String Coach and Artistic Director for the Hebridean Youth Project Summer Music School.
He became Head of Strings at Ampleforth College in 2004 and was involved in coaching various youth orchestras, as well as private individual tuition.
He job was to teach classroom music to year 9, and music technology to years 12 and 13.
He provided individual tuition on violin and viola and directed the Pro Musica Ensemble, the Ceilidh Band and jointly directed the College Orchestra.
Alongside his classic music interests, he has played in many folk music ensembles and has worked widely in the recording industry.
School for deaf accused of ‘catalogue of child abuse’
A YEAR-LONG investigation of a leading school for the deaf by police and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children has disclosed “an appalling catalogue of child abuse and neglect”.
Among the allegations are that some pupils at the Royal School for the Deaf in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, Greater Manchester, suffered broken bones and lost teeth, while others were subjected to unwarranted restraining procedures.
NSPCC officials also investigated claims that deaf or emotionally disturbed children had been punched, tied up and doused with water hoses.
Ian MacLeary, the school’s chief executive, said a new governing body had dealt with many of the issues raised in the report. New training procedures had also been introduced.

Today, despite the year-long inquiry into unexplained injuries to children as well as into poor care and practice, it emerged that no one is likely to face criminal prosecution. Youngsters at the school are regarded as incapable of giving evidence in court.
Last year the MEN revealed how Mark Fisher, 33, – who later resigned in disgust after nine years as a support worker at the school – and two colleagues compiled a dossier detailing 142 allegations of abuse by staff. The evidence was handed to social services and to the police.
Dominic Tinner, development manager at the school, admitted there had been ”deficiencies in management and practice”
12 April 2001
A spokesman for the National Deaf Children’s Society, said it was appalled by the NSPCC report and was gravely concerned by the extent of abuse at the school.
Unless significant immediate action was taken by the school, the society would advise parents to move their children elsewhere.

New boss named for troubled deaf school
A CHILD welfare expert has been drafted in as the new boss of the troubled Royal Schools for the Deaf, Manchester.

A CHILD welfare expert has been drafted in as the new boss of the troubled Royal Schools for the Deaf, Manchester.
NSPCC director Karen Wright, a 47-year-old mother of four, will take up the chief executive’s post in July.
Her appointment comes just over a week after headteacher Leighton Reed resigned following a year-long inquiry by the NSPCC.
Ms Wright was not involved in the probe, which found “serious problems” with the school at Cheadle Hulme, Stockport.
The investigation was launched after the M.E.N. revealed how whistleblowing staff members compiled a dossier of allegations, including physical abuse of pupils.
It was claimed children suffered broken bones, were tied up in wheelchairs and one was hosed down with cold water.
Ms Wright said: “I was not involved in the investigation, although I was kept aware of it.
The current chief executive, Ian MacLeary, retires on July 1, when he turns 65. The charity says his retirement is unconnected to the scandal.
Four members of staff were suspended by the school, which said there were innocent explanations for injuries suffered by pupils.
- Police interviewed dozens of members of staff, but the Crown Prosecution Service decided there was no realistic chance of securing convictions because the alleged victims, who suffer physical and learning disabilities as well as deafness, would be incapable of giving evidence.

Heath made a special point of conducting orchestras involving young musicians. While still prime minister, he conducted the Academy of the BBC at the 50th anniversary concert in the series for children founded by Sir Robert Mayer. Later, it was through Heath’s help that the European Community Youth Orchestra was set up. He became its president, and conducted it on summer tours in 1978, 1979 and 1980.

A vanished file and troubling claims about Heath and young musicians
The ensemble in question was the European Community Youth Orchestra, and it was about to embark on its inaugural tour of EEC capitals. It was to be a flagship for pan-European cultural co-operation.
The 135 musicians, some of whom were as young as 14, were drawn from the then nine member nations. Heath, an enthusiastic amateur musician who had led the United Kingdom into the European Community five years before, was the orchestra’s founding president. He would also be its guest conductor for that tour and several tours to come.
In an intriguing development, the Mail learned this week that a file relating to Sir Edward and the infamous Paedophile Information Exchange group is one of those missing from official Government records.
It is among 114 missing files concerning child abuse identified by an independent review of how allegations were handled by the Home Office.
The title of the missing document, ‘Edward Heath MP [redacted] RE: PIE’, refers to the activities of the Paedophile Information Exchange.
Investigators discovered that the file disappeared more than 25 years ago after being moved to a Westminster record centre. They concluded that there was no evidence of any orchestrated attempts by officials over three decades to cover up child abuse.
But the unexpected absence of the file raises questions about the exact nature of the connection between Heath and the PIE group.
Further new allegations of sexual abuse and possible official cover-up concerning Sir Edward have come to light. They centre on his relationship with the European Community Youth Orchestra.
A retired senior police officer, who served with several southern forces including Wiltshire, told the Mail that there were ‘always rumours’ about Heath, the former MP for Bexley.
The policeman — a widely respected officer with a distinguished career — asked that due to the sensitivities of the Heath investigations, he remain anonymous. He told us that the rumours did not come with any specific evidence against the former PM.
But he went on: ‘The exception were several allegations made against him in his role with the European Youth Orchestra. I understand there were credible claims that Heath indecently assaulted young people on tours to the Continent which he was leading.
‘These tours took place in the late 1970s or early 1980s.
‘It was never clear how old the victims were, or exactly what happened, and what was alleged was not at the top end of the scale of criminality.
‘Why these were never investigated I cannot say. I suspect it is because they took place overseas and the victims were from other countries.’
Ted Heath would have known Dara De Cogan through the European Community Youth Orchestra.
And Heath links to another Ampleforth paedophile – Piers Grant-Ferris – his father Lord Harvington was good friends with Heath and Thatcher.

Music professor at Ampleforth School in court on sex offence charges
A LEADING Roman Catholic school has been rocked by abuse allegations after a music professor appeared in court accused of sex offences against a girl more than 30 years his junior.

The gifted violinist is charged with 12 counts of sexual activity with a child while in a position of trust.
The court heard the victim was a girl aged 16 and 17 at the time of the alleged offences between December 2007 and December 2009.
Dublin-born De Cogan, became leader of the Irish Youth Orchestra in 1978 and represented his country in the European Community Youth Orchestra.
In 1982, he joined the Hallé Orchestra and has played in folk music ensembles and has worked widely in the recording industry.

‘Forty’ abusers at Catholic school

Ampleforth Abbey in North Yorkshire is accused of being a “honeypot” for offenders
Forty monks and teachers have been accused of sexually abusing boys at a leading Roman Catholic school that allegedly became a “honeypot” for offenders, it was revealed yesterday.
Reports of child sex offences at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire were disclosed yesterday at a public hearing of an inquiry into the handling of abuse allegations by the Catholic church.
As a case study, the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse (IICSA) is examining safeguarding policies at two fee-paying boarding schools run by the English Benedictine Congregation — Ampleforth, and Downside in Somerset. Riel Karmy-Jones, QC, counsel to the inquiry, said that it would consider the prevalence of child abuse within the Catholic church and the extent to which Catholic culture “has or does inhibit the proper investigation and prevention” of such crimes.
Since 1996 three monks and two lay teachers at Ampleforth have been convicted of sex offences against pupils, but Ms Karmy-Jones said that the inquiry had been notified of multiple allegations against about 40 monks and teachers.
In an opening statement on behalf of 29 abuse survivors Richard Scorer, a specialist abuse lawyer at Slater and Gordon, the law firm, said that the “temptation to cover up” such crimes was “particularly acute in institutions associated with the Roman Catholic Church”. He said: “Where reputation is key to an organisation’s existence, there is likely to be an almost overwhelming desire to find some way of avoiding the bad publicity associated with child sex abuse.” Shared awareness among child abusers that their misconduct would be covered up, or dealt with in-house, explained why “some institutions become honeypots where multiple offenders operate”.
Mr Scorer urged the inquiry to consider recommending a change in the law to make failure to report abuse a criminal offence.
On behalf of 14 victims and survivors, David Enright said that it was “very difficult to explain” to a non-Catholic “the power and depth of influence the Catholic church exerts over its members. The abusers were not only men in positions of trust; they were seen by the abused, and their families, as spokesmen for the God they worship. It is hard to imagine a greater hold that a child abuser could have over his victim.”
Matthias Kelly, QC, counsel for Ampleforth, said that the school and the abbey wanted “to apologise for the hurt, injury, distress and damage done to those who were abused as a result of our failings”. He said that the school’s policy today was one of “full, transparent and immediate co-operation with the statutory agencies”.
For Downside and the English Benedictine Congregation, Kate Gallafent, QC, said that the Catholic church was committed to giving the inquiry “its full co-operation. The congregation expresses profound shame that any child has been the victim of sexual abuse whilst in the care of the schools connected with its abbeys.”

Boys as young as six allegedly beaten and sexually assaulted at Roman Catholic school in Yorkshire, inquiry into child abuse hears
29 Nov 2017
Priests at a leading Roman Catholic school abused boys as young as six, including beatings and sexual assaults, the national inquiry into child abuse has heard.
Former pupils at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire gave evidence to a hearing in London on Wednesday, and written statements by other former pupils were read.
Many of the allegations centred on two priests, Piers Grant-Ferris who was jailed for two years in 2006 for 20 counts of indecent assault on boys in his care, and another priest referred to as RCF4.
One witness who spent 11 years at Ampleforth College and its preparatory school Gilling Castle from 1965 to 1976, said RCF4 had treated him “disgracefully”. “He was physically violent from the outset… I was physically and psychologically abused,” he told the hearing. RCF4 had been “nasty, cruel and physically violent towards me”.
In his second year, when the witness was eight years old, he said Grant-Ferris would walk behind boys sitting at long refectory tables for meals and select children for beatings. “If he stopped behind you and tapped you, then you knew it was you. If he stopped behind someone else and tapped them, one thing that disturbs me to this day is the feeling of relief that it wasn’t going to be me,” he said.
Once he was beaten in the chapel confessional by the priest after being told to take off his clothes. “It was always with his hands … and his hands would always linger on one’s bare bottom after each smack.”
On another occasion, the witness said Grant-Ferris told him to undress and lie face down on the priest’s bed. “He proceeded to take my temperature rectally. I didn’t even know people could have their temperatures taken rectally, I’d only ever had a thermometer put in my mouth. I begged him not to do it, because I didn’t know what was happening, but he continued anyway. I think technically that was a form of rape.”
Grant-Ferris, the son of a Tory peer, was “the full authority figure” the witness told the hearing. At the school, there were “sexual overtones and currents all the time”, he added.
After he left school, the witness suffered a “total psychological collapse” which lasted seven or eight years. “I wasn’t able to do anything, I couldn’t function.”
He said he believed that Basil Hume, who was abbot of Ampleforth Abbey for 13 years until appointed archbishop of Westminster in 1976, had been aware of abuse at the schools. “I have no doubt he knew exactly what was going on at the time.”
Another witness, who was sent to Gilling Castle at the age of six, told the hearing that he and other boys would cry under their blankets at night as monks wearing long black robes patrolled the dormitories. Grant-Ferris was known as “Pervy Piers” among the children, he said.
According to yet another statement, Grant-Ferris was “handsome and aristocratic” with a perpetual mood of excitement.
This witness also described how another teacher had put his hand down the boy’s trousers “to check my breathing” when he was auditioning for the choir. As a result of his experiences, he said: “I became a very quiet child who didn’t talk to people much.”
The inquiry also heard from a female former pupil at Ampleforth College, who left the school in 2010. She said that a music teacher, Dara De-Cogan, had sexually abused her over a period of years. De-Cogan was jailed for 28 months earlier this year pleading guilty to 10 charges of engaging in sexual activity while in a position of trust.
The witness said that he had groomed her from the age of 13, and his abuse resulted in her self-harming. “I thought I deserved to be punished somehow for what I was doing … [self-harming] gave me a sense of numbness.”
On some occasions, De-Cogan gave her marks out of 10 for oral sex, she said. “He would comment on it as if it was a piece of homework.”
Child protection procedures at Ampleforth were “very poor”, she said. Because of earlier convictions of monks, the college had an “obsessive emphasis on the completion of paperwork, but common sense and looking at what was in front of their faces – that went by the wayside.”
The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse began a three-week hearing on Monday focusing on the Benedictine schools of Ampleforth and Downside. In some cases, abusers were permitted to stay in their posts and allowed to have contact with children and other vulnerable individuals, the hearing was told earlier this week.

Sir Robert Grant-Ferris, Baron Harvington (1907-1997)
Although he appeared to be fairly typical of the Conservative knights of the shire, a landowner and sheep breeder, who was noted for his passion for hunting and whose other principal recreation was yachting, Robert Grant-Ferris was a product of Douai rather than Eton, and he had the unusual distinction of owing his knighthood and later his Barony to the Labour Prime Minister, Harold Wilson. Although he remained a Conservative, he had come to be more a servant of the House of Commons than his party, and he spent his last four years in the House fittingly enough as Chairman of Ways and Means and Deputy Speaker. A man of considerable charm and great energy, he was well-liked in the House and thought of as a possible successor when Dr Horace King retired. However, Selwyn Lloyd was the preferred candidate of the Conservative Party.
Robert Grant Ferris was born on 30 December 1907, the son of a General Practitioner, Dr Robert Francis Ferris, but he seems to have been brought up by his widowed mother, Ellen (d.1955) at Falcon Hill, Cotteridge. Her sister had bought the property in 1892 and Mrs Ferris moved in with her. Robert could often be seen as a child riding his pony in the grounds. The family were strong Roman Catholics and Mrs Ferris seems to have bought Harvington Hall for the Birmingham diocese in 1923. Robert was educated at Douai, the independent school run by the Benedictine monks of Douai Abbey at Woolhampton. Early in life he hyphenated his name, adding an additional Grant to it. He made his early career in a firm of estate agents with whom his family had connections, but his eyes seem to have been firmly fixed elsewhere, on politics – he was elected to the Birmingham City Council in 1933 – and on flying. He joined 605 (County of Warwick) Auxiliary Air Force Squadron in 1933, and by the time the war came was a Flight Lieutenant. He began taking his bar examinations in 1932 and was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1937.
He continued to live with his mother until 1930 when he married Florence Brennan de Vine, daughter of Major Brennan de Vine MC, who died in 1996. They had two children, a son, Piers, who became a monk and taught at Ampleforth, and a daughter, Sheila, with whom he later lived in Jersey. It was fortunate that neither parent lived to see their son identified and tried for the abuse of pupils in his care.
In the 1935 General Election he fought Wigan as a Conservative but lost heavily. Less than two years later, in February 1937, he fought St Pancras North in a by-election and won narrowly. Apart from his staunch support for General Franco in the Spanish Civil War. Grant-Ferris had little impact on the Commons in the late 30s, arguably because he was concentrating on becoming a front-line airman. By 1939 he commanded one of the flights in his squadron and in 1941 was promoted to Wing Commander. During the war he saw active service in France, Malta, Egypt and India.
Towards the end of the war he gave up active service for a return to more active participation in the House of Commons and became PPS to W.S.Morrison, the Minister of Town and Country Planning 1944-45. However, he was swept out of the Commons in the Labour landslide of 1945 by 7,630 votes and did not continue as the Conservative candidate for St Pancras North. Instead he concentrated on his farm and on his directorship of the publishing company, Burns, Oates and Washburne. He became deputy chairman on the Board of the Roman Catholic weekly, The Tablet, a role that he relinquished only in November 1997.
Although a by-election was called in St Pancras North in 1949, Grant-Ferris was not called upon to fight it, and his next attempt at Parliament was in Central Wandsworth, a seat that he failed to take in both the 1950 and 1951 General Elections.
Nantwich, which he won in the 1955 General Election gave him a safe berth until he chose to stand down just before the February 1974 election. In 1962 he became one of the panel of Chairman, who chair standing committees in the Commons. He was well known for his fairness and amiability, and there were many who thought that he would make an excellent Speaker. In 1970 he was appointed deputy Speaker and Chairman of Ways and Means. He had been knighted in 1969 and he was sworn of the Privy Council in 1971. Although not included in Heath’s dissolution honours, he was one of fifteen life peers nominated by Harold Wilson in the summer of 1974 and the only one with no Labour affiliation. He took his title from the house that his mother had given to the Archdiocese of Birmingham.
He always took a considerable interest in Britain’s inland waterways and was one of the Inland Waterways Association’s most influential allies in the House of Commons. He was elected a Vice-President in 1966 and was chairman of the original All-party Waterways Committee.
As privy chamberlain of the sword and cape to Pope Pius XII, Pope John XXIII and Paul VI, Grant-Ferris spent a week each year in attendance on the Pontiff. His strong opposition to abortion was thought to emanate from the Vatican rather than the Catholic hierarchy in this country. He became a Knight Grand Cross of Magistral Grace 1949 and of the Sovereign and Military Order of Malta in 1953.
He was the chairman of the Board of Management of the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in St John’s Wood 1963-70.
Grant-Ferris was a notable breeder of sheep, serving as President of the Southdown Sheep Society of England on three occasions (1950-52, 1959-60, 1973) and presiding over the National Sheep Breeders of Britain 1956-58. He became a Vice President of the Smithfield Club in 1963 and President in 1970.
He was a man with many interests, keen on both hunting and golf, but his main passion was his motor yacht, the 43 ton Melita. He entertained both Edward Heath and the Thatchers aboard her but his plans for a summer cruise with the Thatchers around northern France a year before the couple entered Downing Street had to be cancelled when the French police said they could not guarantee the party’s security. He was a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron and of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, and for a time Honorary Admiral of the House of Commons Yacht Club. He was also a member of the Royal and Ancient at St Andrews, the MCC and, of course, the Carlton Club.
After his retirement from the House he lived abroad for tax reasons, initially in Malta and then in Jersey, although he would contribute to debates in the Lords when the taxman let him return. In 1980, he was one of those who rebelled over the school transport clauses of Mark Carlisle’s Education Bill, which would have imposed charges on the ‘free’ transport enjoyed by students at faith schools.

Top public school suspends child sex charges teacher
3 Mar 2
017
THE head of music at a prestigious private school has been suspended following allegations he sexually assaulted a pupil three decades ago.
Sean Ambrose Farrell, 49, denied two charges of indecent assault and two charges of gross indecency when he appeared before York magistrates last week.
All four offences are alleged to have been committed against a child aged under 14 at the time at Ampleforth College’s junior school.
Ampleforth College, where teacher Sean Farrell worked in the 1980s
Farrell, of Riddings Road, Ilkley, was released on bail on condition that he has no unsupervised contact with children aged under 16.
He has been removed from his post at Wellington College, in Berkshire – which counts the late actor Sir Christopher Lee and Will Young among its alumni – several months ago after North Yorkshire Police launched an investigation.
A Wellington College spokesman said: “In line with our safeguarding procedures, Wellington suspended the member of staff concerned and excluded him from the school site as soon as it was made aware that the police were investigating these accusations.”

Monk ‘who ran sex club involving young boys’ at country’s top Catholic School ‘remained in his job for eight years after allegations were first made’
Apr 5 2017

- Father Jeremy Sierla allegedly ran ‘sex club’ for boys at Ampleforth College
- He remained at Catholic school for eight years after allegations first made
- Police told he would make pupils perform sex acts in their pyjamas
- Investigation began in 2004 but no charges were ever brought against him
Detectives spoke to more than a dozen young men who attended the school’s Junior House between 1990 and 1993 when Father Jeremy was housemaster.
Some recalled the monk whipping boys’ bottoms with his habit, encouraging the pupils to tie him up, showering naked with them and putting his hands under their duvets, the Times reported.
Photos and video clips – none indecent – of Ampleforth pupils were found on Father Jeremy’s computer, including one of a 12-year-old boy holding a rose in his mouth.

Father Sierla, 59, lived and worked at £30,000-a-year college, pictured, until 2012, despite accusations first being made against him eight years previously
The investigation was triggered when the same boy, in his early 20s by 2004, made allegations to police about abuse he claimed Father Jeremy had subjected him to.
The monk was not charged after prosecutors ruled there was insufficient evidence against him, and the CPS said the case file was destroyed years ago, the Times reported.
Father Jeremy continued to work in the abbey shop from 2004 to 2012 and posed for photographs to promote Ampleforth’s own brand Abbey Beer.
A music teacher, Dara de Cogan, who joined Ampleforth in 2004 was jailed last week for sexually abusing a female student during violin lessons.

Dara de Cogan, 58, received a 28-month sentence and will be on the sex offenders register for a decade.
A school spokesman said that Father Jeremy’s continued presence at Ampleforth was approved at a meeting of safeguarding professionals in 2004 and that his case was reviewed again in 2007 by an independent safeguarding commission.
It took a further five years before the Department for Education (DfE)told Ampleforth he should not be allowed on school grounds.
TheDfE said that it was unable to discuss individual cases but stressed it was ‘paramount that children are protected at school and that there are robust safeguards in place’.
It added: ‘Where schools fail to meet standards, we will not hesitate to take action.’

Tories BOW to wealthy antiques dealers and DROP ban on elephant ivory in manifesto
Foxes, badgers, robins and now ELEPHANTS: hidden manifesto plan by Tories to allow ivory trade
Under David Cameron the Conservatives had pledged – along with other UK political parties – to put into place a ban on ivory trading. This follows bans by China, the US and other important ivory trading countries to end domestic trades in ivory by the end of 2017.
But there is no mention of the ban in Theresa May’s Tory 2017 manifesto. Sneakily, the Tories have decided to DROP their previous commitment to introducing a total ban on ivory trade in Britain. This comes after heavy pressure from wealthy antiques traders who have been lobbying Teresa May hard to drop the ban on ivory.
The most powerful UK antique traders association is the British Antique Dealers’ Association – whose president is Tory MP and pal of Theresa May, Lady Victoria Borwick.
On average, an elephant is killed every 15 minutes for its ivory and their population has fallen by almost a third in Africa since 2007.
Interestingly, this policy puts the Tories in direct conflict with Prince William, who has been a vocal supporter of a total ban on ivory sales.
Will we see the Duke of Cambridge campaigning for Labour – which has pledged to introduce the total ban the Prince has been lobbying for?

The Busy Borwicks
Son of Kensington MP Lady Borwick’s curious connections to the people who ensured both Brexit and the election of Donald Trump revealed
On Sunday, Carole Cadwalladr of The Observer published a lengthy and well researched article that, amongst other things, examined the connections between The Hon. Thomas Borwick – the son of the Conservative hereditary peer The Rt. Hon. The Lord Borwick and Kensington’s Member of Parliament Lady ‘Call me Victoria’ Borwick – and the controversial US hedge fund titan and backer of Donald Trump, Robert Mercer.
A director of a multitude of companies, in spite of being just 29 years old, “new media expert” Thomas Borwick – whose mother was forced to apologise “after using City Hall resources to promote her husband’s [now defunct] electric vehicle business” in 2009 – it now transpires, was not only Vote Leave’s chief technology officer but previously worked with SCL/Cambridge Analytica and AggregateIQ. Borwick currently touts himself to his 202 followers on Twitter as the founder of a political canvasing consultancy named Kan.to, an organisation that he boldy claims “will out-organise, out-plan, out-leaflet, out-twitter, out-work and out-vote all of its opponents”.
Mercer, one of the owners of the far-right Breitbart News Network as well as being a major shareholder in Cambridge Analytica, is a man whose “sinister” connections to both Trump and Nigel Farage have rightly been widely criticised. On that basis, that the son of fervent Brexiteer Lady Borwick – a woman whose constituents voted 69% to ‘Remain’ and whose domain was home to a greater proportion of EU nationals than any other London borough in 2016 – has links to this billionaire and his activities should only encourage the voters of Kensington to ditch her and her out-of-touch party.

Revealed: The ‘triple dipper’ Conservative MP who is paid nearly £100,000 a year for three elected jobs
Victoria Borwick, the MP for Kensington, is paid an extra £30,000 a year as both a councillor at Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and member of the London Assembly
Mrs Borwick, 59, whose application to replace Sir Malcolm Rifkind in the seat was personally backed by London Mayor Boris Johnson, defended her decision.
She can use the title “Lady” because she is married to Lord Borwick, a hereditary peer who has sat in the House of Lords since 2013. The couple live in a £6.6million home in Chelsea and have four children.

Mrs Borwick’s predecessor as MP for Kensington Sir Malcolm Rifkind had complained that it was “unrealistic” to live on £60,000 shortly before quitting after being caught in a cash for access investigation by The Daily Telegraph in February.

Slumming it: Tory Lady ventures into East End
July 26, 2014
Role reversal? Could this be the first time a young East Ender gets to look down on a Victoria Lady?
Since the Tories headed up the Coalition after the 2010 General Election, they have been making cuts in public spending and presiding over austerity measures which have made life harder for ordinary Eastenders. Government attacks such as the bedroom tax and welfare benefit tax have left many East End families only able to buy the cheapest, unhealthiest food – or forced them to supplement their own buying with trips to the food bank.
Against this backdrop, Lady Borwick, aka Assembly Member Victoria Lorne Peta Borwick, a Deputy Mayor of London, deigned to drop into Tower Hamlets last week to claim the credit for Tower Hamlets’ work in promoting good health in its schools (that’s the schools which Lady Borwick’s party is trying to dismantle).
2007:

Trump crony Rudy Giuliaini drew inspiration from Winston Churchill in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 terror attack on New York, he revealed.
Mr Giuliani cited the alliance between Churchill and Roosevelt, Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan and Tony Blair and George W Bush as evidence of the powerful bond between Britain and the US. He would make it his mission as President to strengthen the relationship further.
The lunch was attended by about 100 wealthy Americans and dozens of London-based US correspondents.
Conservative mayoral contender Victoria Borwick, who has pledged to introduce Giuliani-style zero tolerance policing, was the only senior Tory present at the lunch at the Hyde Park Mandarin hotel.
“He is a brilliant political leader,” she said.
Mr Giuliani is due to meet Margaret Thatcher tonight at the same hotel before delivering his keynote speech on his manifesto for a 2008 Republican presidential victory.

Rudy Guiliani
Back in 1984, Giuliani was U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. During that time, allegations began to surface about physical and sexual abuse perpetrated on children at the day care center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Giuliani knew there were multiple children being abused. And yet he did not indict anyone. Not receiving justice from Giuliani, the parents pursued civil action. The government ended up paying 11 victims $2.7 million, but protected its image, thanks to Rudy.

History
The BSR was founded in 1901 and received its first Royal Charter in June 1912. Following the International Exhibition in Rome of 1911 celebrating 50 years since Italian reunification, the site of the magnificent Edwin Lutyens-designed British Pavilion was granted in perpetuity to the British nation on condition that it be used exclusively as a British research centre for archaeology, history and the fine arts. In 1916, following significant adaptation by Lutyens, the BSR moved into our current home in via Gramsci, in Rome’s Valle Giulia.
Over the BSR’s first century our facilities for scholars have been substantially extended and refurbished, most recently through generous help from the Packard Humanities Institute and Lord and Lady Sainsbury of Preston Candover’s Linbury Trust, amongst many other sponsors. In 2002 the purpose-built lecture theatre and gallery spaces were opened by our President, HRH Princess Alexandra

… Alastair who apparently wrote the book ‘Baroque and Rococo Architecture and Decoration’ with Blunt. Although cunningly enough the Wiki link shows a slightly different spelling of Laing. (An attempt to hide a link no doubt) The book is given as a source for a study on a baroque architect in NAPLES so ties in nicely. This is a deliciously obvious example of how they close documents from view for 76 years in order to hide from us the fact that we now have a link between Colin Peters and Blunt, both guests of Elm Guest House. The link being that they both knew Alastair Laing, one wrote a book with him and the other was arrested with with him.
Francesco Antonio Picchiatti (Ferrara, 1619–1694) was an Italian architect of the Baroque period active in Naples. He is also called Picchetto. He was son of Bartolommeo Picchiatti, who also served as an architect in Naples.

Pedophiles arrested in Britain eirv16n08, p42Pedophiles arrested in Britain eirv16n08, p43

Investigators working on the Colin Peters case had interrogated at east one senior member of the House of Lords, one vicar in West London and officials in Whitehall, “but the police did not have sufficient evidence or manpower to pursue their suspicions,” the Telegraph reported. So who was the paedophile senior member of the House of Lords in 1989 ?Is Colin Peters connected to Italian paedophile Alessandro Moncini ?Alessandro Moncini, a citizen and resident of Italy, appeals his conviction under 18 U.S.C. § 2252(a) for mailing child pornography from Italy to an undercover officer in the United States. He raises three issues on appeal: (1) whether the district court lacked jurisdiction over him; (2) whether the government should have been required to prove that he knew he was violating American law, or, in the alternative, whether the district court should have recognized ignorance of the law as an affirmative defense; and (3) whether the district court erred in finding that he was not entrapped. We affirm.FACTSMoncini was contacted by Detective William H. Dworin of the Los Angeles Police Department after Dworin discovered Moncini’s name and address in a search of an American pornography collector. Dworin sent Moncini a letter containing a photograph of a nude girl, inquiring whether Moncini would be interested in trading child pornography. Dworin led Moncini to believe the American pornography collector was a mutual acquaintance.Moncini wrote back and asked for more pictures. Dworin complied, but Moncini did not reciprocate by sending similar pictures in return. Dworin eventually asked Moncini to send him some child pornography, offering to send Moncini more explicit material if Moncini would send him child pornography to prove his involvement “with the young ones.” Moncini responded by sending some pages torn from a commercially sold pornography magazine. He subsequently mailed additional pictures and a videotape. Moncini concedes that these pictures and videotape were child pornography of the type proscribed by 18 U.S.C. § 2252.Moncini was arrested when he arrived in New York in early 1988. He was tried in the Central District of California, which includes Valencia, the place to which the photos were sent. His motion to dismiss the indictment for lack of jurisdiction was denied on the ground that the mailings were continuing offenses which continued to take place as Moncini’s letters traveled from Italy to California, giving the court territorial jurisdiction. Alternately, the court found that extraterritorial jurisdiction would be proper.Moncini waived jury trial. His principal defense was ignorance of the law. The district court received uncontroverted evidence in the form of an affidavit by a former member of the Italian bar that the mailing of child pornography is legal in Italy so long as it is not for commercial purposes or purposes of public display. Moncini asserts that he was unaware that his mailing of child pornography was a crime in the United States. The court convicted him and sentenced him to a year-and-a-day custodial sentence. He has completed his sentence and is now at liberty.

We believe it’s time John Goldup former Islington social work manager, gave his full support to Islington Survivors network

Virginia Bottomley, Sandy Marks, Margaret Hodge
Following yesterday’s publication, Mrs Bottomley issued a statement saying she had instructed Islington Council to explain its actions ‘as soon as possible’.
The council also issued a statement from Labour councillor Sandy Marks, who chairs the social services committee.
‘The case of Roy Caterer was the subject of a Hertfordshire police investigation. No evidence or information was passed to the council.’
We (The Standard) reply: This is clearly wrong. Caterer was only imprisoned for sexually abusing children in care when a determined Islington social worker found some of his victims and went to local police. They liaised with Hertfordshire police. That social worker wrote a report for her superiors and no action was taken on it.
Councillor Marks also claimed children interviewed by the Standard were paid.
And Mrs Margaret Hodge, leader of Islington Council, alleged in a radio interview with LBC Newstalk Radio that our reporters sat outside childrens home enticing children with £50 bribes for stories.
We reply: These allegations are absolutely untrue
2009

Mail on Sunday, 4th October 2009
THE Government’s childcare watchdog has been heavily criticised after appointing to a senior post an official embroiled in a notorious paedophile scandal.
Ofsted has named John Goldup as its social care director – a job which gives him effective control of the protection of youngsters in care homes and nurseries across the UK.
At the time of his appointment, Mr Goldup said: I am absolutely convinced that effective inspection and regulation are the key to driving up improvement.
But during the Eighties and early Nineties, Mr Goldup was the second most senior figure in the children’s department at Islington Council in North London.
The council was savaged in a series of official reports after whistleblowers revealed how a child sex ring had operated throughout the borough’s care homes for a number of years.
An independent inquiry headed by Ian White – then director of social services in Oxfordshire – found that the council was in a deplorable state.
The report added: Line managers should have visited children’s homes, should have taken necessary action, should have spoken to children and … should have responded to allegations as serious as the ones made and now investigated.
Mr Goldup had left his post by the middle of 1994 and has spent the past 15 years with another London borough, most recently in charge of services for the elderly and disabled.
In 1992, the council was asked by police investigating the abuse allegations for paperwork relating to Nick Rabet, who helped run one of the homes. He was later exposed as a key organiser of the sex ring. Despite the existence of a number of documents raising concerns about him, in particular his unhealthy relationship with a 13-year-old boy, Rabet’s file had mysteriously disappeared.
At the same time, four staff who had raised concerns about the 58-year-old and other suspected paedophiles working in Islington’s homes were sacked, demoted or threatened.
Rabet killed himself in Thailand three years ago while awaiting trial there for child abuse. He was charged with molesting 30 underage boys and was believed to have abused up to 300 more.
Detective Chief Superintendent Kevin Moore, of Sussex Police, which investigated Rabet, said Islington actively thwarted attempts in the early Nineties to bring Rabet and his cohorts to justice.
He said: If we’d had the usual co-operation that you expect and deserve from other agencies, it’s a very strong likelihood we would have got a conviction.
Clearly, if you don’t get that co-operation – and in this case we didn’t – you cannot get a case to put before the court, and justice was denied.
We are all in a position of trust and of trusting each other to do what’s right, but in this case that trust was abused.
When it was founded, Ofsted was responsible largely for school inspections. But in 2007, its remit was significantly extended to cover children’s social care and support services.
A spokesman for Ofsted said: John Goldup has a long and distinguished track record in delivering care services, most recently leading Tower Hamlets to an outstanding rating for its adult services for five years in a row.
There is nothing to question John Goldup’s integrity or his ability to fully and professionally carry out his role at Ofsted, a role he was appointed to following a fully independent and robust recruitment process.
The panel were fully aware of every aspect of his employment history throughout this process.
While allegations relating to Islington are ultimately a matter for the council, we are confident there is nothing to support suggestions that he acted, then or at any other time, in anything other than a professional manner.
Ofsted has full confidence in John in his vital new role as director of social care development.

‘I want to change perceptions of Ofsted’ – John Goldup
Rifts are deepening with the Association for Directors of Children’s Services and local authorities over unannounced inspections and the criteria used to mark safeguarding services as inadequate. Relations with the ADCS fell to an all-time low in October with numerous allegations that Ofsted’s inspection regime was actually working to undermine public confidence in children’s services.

Diplomat jailed over hoard of child porn
6 September 1996
Robert Coghlan, a diplomat, was jailed for three years yesterday for smuggling a hoard of “filthy” child pornography into Britain. The divorced father of two, the first British envoy to be convicted of such an offence, spent thousands of pounds in Japanese sex-shops.
Coghlan, 54, was building up his illicit video collection when he helped the Princess of Wales around Tokyo last year. He ended up with the biggest consignment of paedophile material seized by Customs recently – sacks of tapes depicting boys as young as 11 being abused.
Passing sentence at Southwark Crown Court, Judge Gerald Butler QC told the former first secretary: “There is no evidence … that you used or intended to use this obscene material for any purpose other than for your own sexual gratification but a custodial sentence is inevitable. I am satisfied beyond doubt that you always knew that large numbers of these video cassettes involved the exploitation, abuse and degradation of children. If it were not for men such as you to provide a market for this filth, there would be no incentive for others to manufacture and sell them for their own profit.”
Coghlan, of Danbury Street, Islington, north London, was found guilty on Thursday of one charge of smuggling 109 obscene videos into Britain last March. The court heard he worked four and a half years in Tokyo. When told he was being transferred to Madrid, he “desperately” tried to ensure his “precious” films arrived safely.
He hoped his status and a false last-minute declaration that he had no prohibitive goods among his shipped belongings would be enough. But Customs men searched some of his luggage and found the tapes. Coghlan’s defence was that as he had always believed his belongings would be shipped directly to Spain, he could never have had any intention of smuggling them into Britain.
When he found they were coming here, he had “no option” but to lie on a Customs clearance form.
Denying he was a paedophile, he insisted he ended up with the videos only because he could not properly translate the labels. Coghlan said that he had never been certain what he was buying, an assertion rejected by the judge.
A government spokesman said Coghlan’s case was being examined under the Foreign Office’s disciplinary procedure. A Foreign Office spokesman refused to say whether Coghlan’s dismissal was a foregone conclusion.
However, another source said it was “inconceivable” that the envoy would be kept on.
